Dentist for Toddlers - At What Age Should They Start Going?

Have you welcomed a new addition to the family and are wondering when it’s time to start taking your children to the dentist? The American Dental Association recommends that the first dental visit is by their first birthday or within 6 months of their first tooth coming in.

The first dental visit for your child will be more of an introduction to the dental office and the dental staff than an actual cleaning. We want your children to have a positive first experience at the dental office so they aren’t scared to come back for regular treatment when the need arises. Usually, the first dental visit is called a “fun visit'' to instill a positive experience. This includes taking a “ride” with us in the dental chair, playing with our tiny squirt gun and helping count their teeth! We also can’t forget a trip to our treasure chest where there’s many prizes and toys to choose from!

Dental nutrition is an important focus of your child’s first dental visit. Surprising snacks like raisins and sticky fruits can actually cause cavities in baby teeth. Drinks like milk and juice should be followed by brushing or at the very least, drinking water. Milk and fruit juice consumption should be monitored, this will be reviewed with the parent(s) at their first dental visit! It is recommended to have a “no milk or juice one hour before bedtime” rule so the sugars don’t sit on their teeth overnight and cause cavities to form. We advise not to give your child a sippy cup with anything other than water at nighttime, especially while they are in bed.
