Can Invisalign Go Wrong?

Can Invisalign Go Wrong?

What is Invisalign? The definition is in the name! Invisalign is clear (invisible) aligners, meant to align, or straighten your teeth. The easiest way to think about Invisalign is that they are clear, removable braces. You may be considering having your teeth straightened but don’t want to wear traditional braces due to age or esthetic reasons, Invisalign would be a great option for you!

Typically, Invisalign trays are worn 24/7 and only taken out when you eat/drink while in active orthodontic treatment. So, you must commit fully to wearing them or they will not work. However, Invisalign is a great option for orthodontic treatment and compared to traditional braces or brackets, can even cut the time in half that you would need to wear them!

While considering if Invisalign is right for you, you may be wondering can Invisalign go wrong? There is a possibility for Invisalign to not heed accurate or desired results. If not planned properly, Invisalign will not move the teeth properly. Patients can sometimes end up with undesired results such as protrusive teeth, asymmetric teeth or teeth that haven’t fully straightened. There’s also the risk for gum disease, jaw problems, and unstable results.

The risk of orthodontics going wrong increases when you use less expensive Invisalign alternatives or other brands of clear aligners that are not Invisalign, such as Smile Direct Club and Byte. The reason being these companies do not have actual orthodontists that work for them. They use strictly computer generated software to generate their cases which can sometimes go wrong. This can cause teeth to be moved too quickly which can result in teeth becoming loose or falling out. If any of these issues arise, there is no doctor for you to be able to contact when using Invisalign alternatives.

With difficult orthodontic cases, it’s best to have an orthodontist review the case to make changes that computer software is not programmed to handle. Invisalign does this! They have each case reviewed by a board of orthodontists to come up with what’s called a “ClinCheck.” This is a review of the case that is sent back to the treating doctor before submitting the case to be made for the patient. Be cautious of Invisalign alternatives and advocate for yourself as a patient!
