Pediatric Dentist - Until What Age Should My Child Go?
Having your kids go to the dentist at an early age is exceptional for their dental health and overall health. Most importantly, this helps to create good habits early on. By getting them familiar with the dentist at an early age, it makes the environment less “scary” to them! Going early on they can associate good things with the dentist, as opposed to waiting until it is “too late” and it may not be as pleasant of an experience. The ADA advises that your child visit the dentist for the first time by the time their first tooth erupts or no later than their first birthday.
With this being said, your child will become acquainted with their pediatric dentist at an early age. In fact, they can continue to see their pediatric dentist for quite some time! Some kids may switch to a “Family Dentist” in middle school or high school, but to be frank pediatric dentists are specialized in seeing kids of all ages and those with disabilities. So it is fair to say that there is no age at when your child should stop seeing their pediatric dentist. Rather, it is a family decision to be made! If you feel that your child is best suited in a pediatric office then that is completely okay with that decision. On the other hand, if you feel that your child is ready to step into a different dental office where they also work with children then that is doable too!
If you think that you may be interested in bringing your child to a regular general dentist, talk with your current or a pediatric dentist for some insight! In this way, he or she can help guide you with your decision.
